Dear Britney,

First, I'm curious if you are still "plugged in" the the Finding the Good blog, and if you will get poked or something on Facebook telling you that I've even written this message so that you read it.

Second, I'm a friend of Tom & Debby's and I was just reading a few of the FTG blogs from last semester, and yours really struck me strongly. About a week ago, I had the strangest dream about making friends with a whale (an orca, actually)---and it was so odd, because there was no fear (which you write about too) -- just me and the orca and really BEING together. It was one of the most powerful dreams that I've ever had (and I'm not usually "into" dreams, nor have I ever experienced being near whales in the wild), but then, just now, reading your journal about the direct and personal experience that you had with the whales, it just struck me in an unusual way.

So, I wanted to write and ask you if it was your sense that whales are somehow different from other animals in how they communicate, non-verbally, with human beings? And how, if at all, did that direct experience with the whales change the way that you think about or interact with nature? Looking back nine months later, what sticks with you?

Curiously yours from the far away land of Turkey,
:) Robin

p.s. And thanks to Annabelle, too, for the photographs!

Dear Jon,

First, I'm curious if you're still linked in with the Finding the Good blog and if you'll even respond to this. Second, I'm a friend of Tom & Debby's so I was just broswing the FTG web site to find out more about what had happened in the last year or two. Would love to hear what prompted you to write the tiny entry on March 10, 2010 -- about math being just like life.

Curiously yours from the far off land of Turkey,

This is the sweetest thing ever. Your writing really drives it home. Thank you! There is a friendliness and ferocity in nature at the same time, stunning. A truly memorable encounter. Thank you for sharing, and thank you for making this connection with this animal messenger.

Great work, Annabelle!

I was interested to read that the beauty of the place brought you to tears. After spending so much time with Doug and really evaluating my personal values and role as a teacher, the importance of his work and my experience there really shook me on the deepest levels. I too, when boarding the plane from Puerto Montt to JFK via Santiago, settled into my seat and cried. It was of course due in part to the combination of fatigue, caffeine, and transition, but time with a person like that in a place like that can really move somebody.

It was wonderful to meet you on each of our journeys, and I hope that our paths cross again!

Annabelle,
Go on. Tell us more. More pictures. More about life. Keeping going. You have an audience back here in the springtime Sierra. Robins everywhere. Owls calling. I wish I knew their language, too. We keep listening, even though we can't really understand. Keep trying.
